Sunday 1st June:

Musical Entertainment and Afternoon Tea in St Mary's Church, Chapel Lawn

Residents of Chapel Lawn were treated to an afternoon of poetry and music from local performers of all ages and hosted by our perennial MC, Andrew Gibbs.  Many people had brought their wedding photos as requested and they were pinned up on a board at the front of the church for everyone to admire.  The church was beautifully decorated thanks to Andy and Claire's wedding the day before and tea, sandwiches and delicious cakes were served afterwards.  All proceeds went to the church.

Wednesday 5th December WI Christmas Social

The Village Hall was again full for the WI Christmas entertainment.  Thank you to everyone who organised it and provided the food.  After a delicious buffet supper and puddings, Alan Grosvenor, a farmer from Brimfield entertained us with jokes and anecdotes, which had us all in stitches.  Here are some photos taken by the official WI photographer for the evening, Patrick Cosgrove:

Then in reply to the men's pudding competition last week (see below) James and Bob, the self-appointed judges for the evening tasted the puddings made by the WI members and awarded first place to Beryl's lovely chocolate cake and gave it a hastily made 'rosette'!

After the entertainment we all sang carols and the obligatory 'Rugged Cross', finishing with 'Auld Lang Syne'

Chapel Lawn Newsletter - THE REDLAKE

Everyone in the Chapel Lawn ward will have had their first copy of The Redlake delivered.  Initial feedback has been very favourable and we are all delighted with it.  If you have not seen it or would like to read it on-line follow the link on the menu to the left or click here.

Renewable Energy Meeting

Patrick Cosgrove and Liz Campbell have been investigating the possibility of the community investing in some sort of energy production scheme.  A mention was made in The Redlake this month of the possibility of grants being available and a call to all those who might be interested to get in touch with Liz or Patrick.  An initial meeting took place on 20th January 2008 at Liz and Ian Campbell's house at Pentre Hodre.

November 2007

Friday 30th November 'Pints and Puds' Chapel Lawn Church and Village Hall Social.

Last Friday, the Redlake Village Hall was inundated with puddings all prepared and cooked by the male residents of Chapel Lawn and surrounding villages.  About twenty sweets, desserts and puddings were presented, from pavlova to apple pie, trifle to syrupy sponge.  It's amazing what a little competition can produce and the winning pudding, by Neil Marsh was a masterpiece of chocolate roulade with cream and raspberries.  We all stuffed ourselves on the delicious concoctions after they had been judged by Rosemary Owen and then thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the evening.  The event raised £531, which is to be split equally between the Church and the Village Hall.  Well Done All!

The Redlake - Chapel Lawn Newsletter

It has been decided by general consensus that the community would benefit from a local newsletter.  The first issue is currently being created and will be out probably in the New Year.  The publication is to be called 'The Redlake' and will be duplicated on this website with some more detailed articles and pictures.  Any one with any stories, suggestions, articles or information, which you think would benefit the residents of Chapel Lawn and the surrounding area, please contact redlake@squirefarm.co.uk

Children in Need

Some of you know that James Middleton likes to have a bit of fun!  His latest caper took the form of taking bets on his neighbour's dinner party on Saturday night.  Christine Page has been doing a cookery course in London and we were all asked to bet on how much of the dinner she would be cooking herself and how much she would buy in ready prepared!  Thanks to the generosity of the diners and others who sportingly placed bets and the good will of Christine herself, £57.00 was raised for Children in Need.

July 2007

The road past Chapel Lawn Farm - flooded!

The River Redlake took a new course during July; via James Middleton's farmyard, down the road and into the field on the other side.  It slowed traffic a bit, but didn't cause a major problem.

September 2007

Extraordinary meeting of the Redlake Valley Village Hall committee on Wednesday 5 September

As a result of the discovery of some severe electrical problems in the hall during a routine inspection. In addition to a discussion to agree a resolution for the electrical issues, the revival of the Chapel Lawn Newsletter, hall improvements and money raising were also covered. Please click here to read the draft minutes.

Chapel Lawn Village Walk and Lunch

Sunday 9th September

It was a beautiful day for a walk and there was a great turn out of people from the surrounding areas as well as from Chapel Lawn.  Families, friends, couples, groups of teenagers; with or without dogs could be seen striding up on to the camp or clambering up Hodre Hill.  Drinks were on offer half way round (for a while!) and a warm welcome back at the village hall for the intrepid ramblers.  Lunch was a sumptuous spread provided by the WI and the hall was full to overflowing.

This report would not be complete without a mention of Mr Middleton's pavlova - (yes, that's a pudding, not an infection!)  Made by the man himself.... he told us..... several times!  Sadly, it proved so popular that it was all gone by the time some of us got to the sweets.  Never mind, there were still plenty of delicious creations left.  The challenge has now been set  for the men of the village to make the puddings for the Christmas 'bash'.

There was also an opportunity to air your views about the Parish Plan, results of which will be available at a later date.

Hodre Pond Clearance

On 12 August local volunteers met for the Hodre Pond Clearing, an annual event to control an invasive species of pond-weed. The weather, and the turnout were good, and with everyone's hard work we now have a pond in tip-top condition. Well done and thanks to all who took part. Next year's date (tbc): 10 August 2008.
